Suicide's Note: Due Wednesday, September 4

English IV, you've heard me say how shorter poems can be harder to interpret.  For this week's blog post, I want you to test this theory.  Read the following poem and complete steps 2-5.  Your post should include the answers to the steps; be sure to label each answer (e.g. Step 2: the).  Don't forget to tell why!  No text language, bad grammar ,or copying others' posts, please.  Have fun ;-)

Suicide's Note
The calm,
Cool face of the river
Asked me for a kiss.

  1. Step 2: Calm (Line 1), because it shows the tone of the situation.
Step 3: "Asked me for a kiss" (Line 3), it tells that the speaker has probably fallen into the water trying to fulfill the river's wish.
Step 4: Personification, because the river is asking for humanly things which temps the speaker into suicide.
Step 5: Never fall for temptation, for it leads to nothing good. I chose that theme because the river asked him for a kiss and the title is "Sucide's Note". -Ethel R.

    1. Step 2. Line one(The calm) tells the mood of the poem
Step 3. Line two(cool face of the river) that person probably fell into the river and the water was cold against their face.
Step 4. Personification was used in lines two and three. It gave the river qualities of a human.
Step 5. It simply tells that you should never give someone your all, who is not worthy of your love.

  2. 2: (Line 1) calm because its telling how quiet and peaceful the river was on that day.
3: (line 3) Asked me for a kiss I think its telling like he prolly put his mouth in the water and drunk from it
4: Personification The calm cool face of the river asked me for a kiss. Rivers don't have faces and also can't kiss
5: The theme of the poem Never try to drink from a river because u never know what can happen. This theme relates to the poem because it's called Suicide note maybe he fell over in the river and couldn't swim and died

  3. 2. Kiss because it is probably doesn't literally mean kiss. Maybe it means touch.
3.cool face of the river because the face of the river is the surface so it probably means touch it. It doesn't have to be a kiss on the face.
4.the calm cool face of the river- personification beacuse river doesn't have a face.
5.i think the poem means that its was a bad thinggoing to happen. Seeing the title suicide note, maybe the person wanted to commit suicide and drowned him or herself. The river was tempting.

  4. 2:Calm:Tells how the river is while the author is near it.
3:Cool face of the river tells how the river looks as he looks at it and think of what chance he should take.
4:Personification rivers may look cool and also calm but a river can not kiss and a river also does not have a face.
5:The title of the poem actually relates to the poem a lot because it says Suicide Note it is saying that the river is trying to catch the author attention to jump in the river or get in to kill himself.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Step2: River,Because the title of the poem is "Suicide's Notes" which means to me that maybe the person in the poem is around river and is about to jump in it.
Step3:(Line 3) "Asked me for a kiss" , simply mean to me that he/she was standing over the river, looking down into it and he/she was becoming more convince to jump in.
Step4: Personification .."The Calm, Cool face of the River Asked me for a kiss" . Rivers do not have faces, they can't speak not can they kiss.
Step5: The theme I chose is: "Dont allow the hardships of life to push you to the edge were you find yourself giving up and dying. That's my theme because before someone do something relating to suicide, sonething or someone had to cause them to wanna die.

  7. S:2 calm because its explaining the river feelings
S:3 LINE 3 Ask me for a kiss...he/she maybe was picturing someone face in the water that passed away or died n da water
S:4 Personification-the Calm, Cool face of the river.. the river doesn't have lips to kiss nor a mouth to ask for a kiss.
S:5 The theme of this poem I think its base on someone that got killed or died in da water is getting thought about

  8. Step 2: Kiss because maybe it is trying to say something else based on the title.

Step 3: Line 3 (Asked me for a kiss) because the poem is trying to tell of someone attempting to attempt suicide by jumping into a river.

    Step 4: Personification
The river is not really asking for a kiss. It is probably a mental thing of someone thinking about going into the river.

Step 5: Never attempt to end something so valuable because you will never know what you will lose or leave behind. I say this because I think someone is attempting to commit suicide based on the title and line 3 of the poem.

  9. Step 2 (Line 2) River, because it lets me know the setting of the poem.
Step 3 (Line 1) "The calm" , I chose that line because it tells me the feeling of the situation.
Step 4 (Imagery & Personification) my reason for choosing these two particular literary features was because , I can picture the person keeping calm throughout their situation until its time to let go of life , The River asks for kiss to let the person know they aren't alone.
Step 5 "Let Go and Let God" i chose this theme because this person in the poem is thinking about commiting Suicide and they feel alone so they look out upon the cool river for peace.

  10. Step 2:River, because the poem mostly explain how it was.
Step 3:(Line 3),"Asked me for a kiss," because,to me, i think the speaker was making it seem as if the river wanted a kiss but really the speaker was going 2 drown, based on the title Suicide's Note.
Step 4:Personification, because the speaker was giving the river human-like qualities,'asking for a kiss.'
Step 5: The theme of the poem is , i think someone is trying to kill them-self , but they shouldn't because whatever you are going through, it could be a test, in you never know what's in stored for you in the long run.My Opinion

  11. Step 2: River, because it lets you know he was isolated and by himself.
Step 3: Asked me for a kiss because it was over and he obliged.
Step 4: Personification, the river can't ask you for a kiss.
Step 5: Just because you kiss the calm and cool river it will not solve any of your problems, just put an end to you. The writer thinks he will be better if he commits suicide

  12. Step 2:River......he was trying to face the river with his problems.
Step 3: Cool face of the river.....the writer was facing a fear at the river, but it was his self that he was facing.
Step 4:Personification...river has a face and asked for a kiss.
Step 5:The title is suicide notes. The writer is trying to face something that he cant and want to commit suicide. You will think life will be much easier once gone but it want be for your loved ones..

    ReplyDelete
  13. Step 2: Calm because everything was peaceful and goin as plan.
Step 3: Asked for a kiss ....I think the writer was lookin in to the water and kiss there pass and just fallen into the river.
Step 4: The writer used Personification because it said the cool face of the river asked for a kiss.....it gave that part human like qualities.
Step 5: The theme I pick was never to kiss a calm river because it can lead you to death that why they got the title suicide's note.... the river kill the poor persons by askin for a kiss

    ReplyDelete
  14. Step 2: I chose calm because as he was near the water everything is calm n quiet.
Step 3: I chose asked for a kiss because i think that as the writer was drinking from the water it felt has if he was kiss another person.
Step 4: The writer uses personification because the river can not ask for a kiss.
step 5: The theme I chose was that just because everything is so nice, peaceful, and calm doesn't mean that it won't kill you.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Step 2: River is the most important word because it's putting it like the river is talking to the author.
Step 3: Asked me for a kiss is the important line because I think the author is saying the water looks so peaceful he wants to jump in it.
Step 4: Personification because the author making it seem like the ocean is a human and it's talking.
Step 5: I think the theme is of the poem is the author wanted to die. That's why I think the title is "Suicide's Notes.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Step 2: I choose the word calm because the speaker wanted to be in a place where she can be able to relax.
Step 3: I think line 2 is important because, the speaker wanted jump in the river and that's how he cimmited suicide.
Step 4: I think both lines are using personification because the river was giving human quality.
Step 5: Suicide doesn't have to happen in a bad way.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Step 2: I choose the word "calm" because it let me know what the mood of the poem is and how the person feel in the poem.
Step 3: I think line 3 Ask me for a kiss is important to me because the speaker wanted to drink from the river at that point but the speaker really didn't want to put his mouth well his face in the water.
Step 4: I think Personification because the speaker gave human like quality to the river.
Step 5: My theme for the poem "Suicide's Note" is never trust a calm, peaceful river in your life because it can lead to death at all times.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Step 2: I say calm because it describe the setting, that it quiet and peaceful.
Step 3: " Cool face of the river" because the speaker can be looking at the river and have suicidal thought in he / she mind.
Step 4: Personification because it giving human life quality to a non-living thing.
Step 5: The theme I choose was "you have more to live for".

    ReplyDelete
  19. Step 2:The word cool is the most important word in the poem. I chose this word because it describes the river which later in the poem kills him.

Step 3:" Cool face of the river" is the most important line the poem. The way I see this line, may be different from how everyone else sees this line. I believe that the author sees a cool face which happens to be his face. And it's not someone else asking him for a kiss, it's him self asking to kiss himself.

Step 4: Personification is probably the only figurative language in the poem. When the author says "Cool face of the river," he gives the river a human quality. Because a river can't have a face, and by him saying that, it really shows me that the author is now talking about his face which happens to be a reflection in the river.

Step 5: My theme for this poem is don't let beauty of a pretty face ruin you because a pretty face could kill you or make you do things you wouldn't normally do.

  21. Step2. River is the most important word to me becauseit shows the location.

Step 3. Cool face of the river has the most importance in this particular poem. I chose this sentence because it's telling the most enticing thing about the river. This sentence, well line, tells us what made intrigued him in the water.

Step 4. The author uses personification in the second
line when he said Cool face of the river.

Step 5. To me, the theme of the poem ist that although going face first in a river may seem very enticing it's never a good idea. I say this cause inferring from the title i think his trying to kiss the river killed him.

Step4: Personification a river can not talk and a river doesn't has a face unless the author was standing in front of the river and saw her own reflection .
Step5: The theme I chose was enjoy life and don't trust to many things that's always calm or seems to be calm because even if it is calm it can turn around and kill you just like that!!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Step 1: Calm, because it is peaceful and don't want any trouble.
